Analyst Drops Stark Tesla Stock Price Target

Tesla ( NASDAQ:TSLA ) is facing one of Wall Street's most extreme bearish calls, with GLJ Research analyst Gordon Johnson reiterating a Sell rating and a $24.86 price target that implies roughly 92% downside. His thesis is straightforward: Tesla's current valuation assumes enormous future value from Full Self-Driving, Robotaxi and Optimus, while the company's core financial performance remains far less convincing.
Warning! GuruFocus has detected 5 Warning Signs with TSLA.

The second quarter was ugly, Johnson said, pointing to Tesla's 1.4% operating margin and negative $1.1 billion of free cash flow.
Tesla's own second-quarter filing confirms the pressure. Revenue rose 26% year over year to $28.24 billion, but operating income fell 57% to $398 million. Capital expenditures surged 142% to $5.79 billion, overwhelming $4.70 billion of operating cash flow and pushing free cash flow negative.
Johnson's bigger concern is autonomy.
He argues that Tesla's FSD performance does not yet justify the valuation investors assign to Robotaxi. The supplied report cites tracked FSD v14 data showing disengagement roughly every 40 miles and points to 22 collisions reported in NHTSA filings over the past year. NHTSA requires manufacturers and operators to report certain crashes involving automated-driving and Level 2 driver-assistance systems, making those disclosures a key regulatory data point for autonomy investors.
Tesla is nevertheless pushing ahead. In Q2, the company reported 1.48 million active FSD subscriptions, up 56% year over year, and said it had launched Robotaxi operations in three Florida cities while beginning Cybercab production.
Johnson's $24.86 target ultimately depends on one question: how much value should investors assign to businesses that are still being built?
Tesla investors should watch Robotaxi expansion, FSD subscription growth, disengagement and crash data, operating margins and free cash flow.
The bearish case strengthens if autonomy rollout remains slow while capex keeps climbing and margins stay near current levels.
But Johnson's thesis weakens materially if Tesla can scale unsupervised Robotaxi service, improve safety performance and convert rising FSD adoption into high-margin recurring revenue.
For now, Tesla's valuation leaves investors betting less on today's earnings and far more on whether autonomy delivers what the stock already appears to price in.
