SK Hynix stock sees record plunge in Korea despite impressive Nasdaq debut

SK Hynix ( SKHYV , SKHY ) made its impressive Nasdaq ( ^IXIC ) debut on Friday, but the South Korean shares ( 000660.KS ) are now plunging.

Yahoo Finance Senior Business Reporter Ines Ferré and AInvest managing editor Adam Shapiro chat with Morning Brief host Julie Hyman about the company's market moves and earnings outlook.

We really were zeroing in on SK Hex there this morning because it had a record drop in Korean trading. Now, a record drop is 15%, which I have to admit I was pretty surprised about that a record drop is only 15% given how much this stock swings, but that is the case. So, you know, it had um all of this enthusiasm and building of excitement over the US listing, but you know, now we're seeing kind of paying the Piper in Korea, I guess.

Yeah, and I think that we've seen a lot of volatility when it comes to the chip stocks, but with this one also, you had a report in South Korea that was from a brokerage firm that talked about operating profit for its latest quarter that it's uh that it's set to trail by consensus 8%. And so that there's this whole thing with their high bandwidth memory that has been going up in price but not as much in price as other components. So, perhaps because this is this is one of their advantages, right? That they provide to Nvidia, this high bandwidth memory, but that is also in fact going a little bit against them because it's not going up in price as much.

So that report you're talking about, they're going to report their earnings at the end of the month uh for Q2. It's going to be the 29th, I believe of July. And the the report, they still are expected to have a blockbuster huge operating profit, 60.4 trillion won. You know, do the calculation on what that would be in dollars, but what the street is expecting and what the stock, you know, why the ADR was so popular here is that the expectation was 65 trillion won. So there's already a disappointment before we get to the earnings. But this is kind of the theme with a lot of the the whether you want to call it the AI trade or the hyperscalers or the inventory and the chip makers. People are trying to figure out what is truly going on, what is the real value and you get the panic headlines. I think it was Drudge report last week had a headline, AI doesn't work. That's what they were saying. AI works by the way. It has mistakes just like people. Right. So that's a lot of what would appear to be driving this, but then you would probably understand better than I, I certainly don't get it, but the leverage when you talk about the ETFs, how that amplifies, you get a movement in the stock and the leveraged ETFs up or down, it's out of proportion.

There's a lot of that's going into the volatility that we've been seeing, but I also think that there's this kind of expectation that everything is sort of priced for perfection, that everything is is looking forward. and what if there is less spending in the future? I mean, this is going to take down that whole sort of AI memory trade that has been so dominant in the market.
