The United States and Iran exchanged another round of missile strikes Thursday, signaling the latest escalation in the five-month war as fighting spread across the Middle East and hopes for renewed peace talks continued to fade. The latest attacks came after the U.S. military launched what it called a "heavy wave of strikes" against dozens of targets tied to Iran's Revolutionary Guard, including military command centers, missile and drone facilities, and coastal defense sites. The operation came after Iran fired missiles at a U.S. military base in Jordan earlier this week. Before the strikes, President Donald Trump previewed the military response, saying the U.S. had "got to smack them a little bit" after Iran targeted American forces. Iran responded Thursday by launching another barrage of missiles. Jordan said it intercepted five missiles for the second straight day, while Kuwait said one person was killed after a missile struck a building owned by a Chinese company. Drone strikes Wednesday sparked fires aboard two natural gas vessels at Egypt's Port of Damietta, according to British maritime security firm Ambrey. Egyptian officials said preliminary investigations found the fires were caused by a drone, though no group has claimed responsibility. No injuries were reported, and port operations continued. Saudi Arabia has also accused Iran-backed militias in Iraq of launching drones at its oil facilities in recent days, while Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for separate attacks targeting Saudi energy infrastructure. The expanding conflict continues to raise concerns about global energy supplies. Much of the fighting has centered on the Strait of Hormuz , where about 20% of the world's oil and natural gas passed before the war.
