Elon Musk’s New Texas Facility Will be 36 Times Bigger Than the Empire State Building. Here’s Everything We Know So Far.
Picture a building 36 times the square footage of the Empire State Building. Elon Musk says he is going to put one in rural Texas and fill it with chip-making equipment capable of producing more than a terawatt of computing power a year for humanoid robots, self-driving cars, and orbital data centers. The name is Terafab.
Terafab is a joint venture of Tesla ( NASDAQ:TSLA | TSLA Price Prediction ), SpaceX, and xAI, which merged into SpaceX in February 2026. It sits in Grimes County, about an hour northwest of Houston, on the former Gibbons Creek Reservoir site, once used to cool a coal-fired power plant shuttered in 2018. SpaceX says it will draw cooling water from that reservoir rather than local groundwater, a direct answer to community pushback over data-center water use. Musk teased the project in March 2026 and confirmed it with Tesla on August 6, 2026.
The confirmed footprint is more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space. That is roughly 5 times the New Century Global Center in Chengdu, China (18.9 million sq ft), currently the largest building on Earth. It is bigger than the Pentagon (6.6 million sq ft), Apple Park (2.82 million sq ft), and the Mall of America (5.6 million sq ft) combined. It is more than 10 times the floor space of TSMC’s largest existing fabs and about 10 times Tesla’s own Gigafactory Texas (~10 million sq ft). Set against the Empire State Building’s 2.7 million square feet of office space, Terafab would be roughly 36 times larger. Musk, on X, called it “the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far. And it will be stunningly beautiful.”
The price tag has shifted twice. Musk first floated $25 billion in March 2026. On August 6, Tesla and SpaceX confirmed a $16.8 billion first phase. A SpaceX regulatory filing suggests the total could eventually reach $119 billion across multiple phases. Texas is contributing a $30 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant. Terafab has filed eight tax-incentive applications with two local school districts under the state’s JETI program, seeking to freeze school property taxes at roughly 48% of appraised value for 10 years per phase.
The pitch is a vertically integrated fab combining logic, memory, advanced packaging, and testing under one roof. Musk framed it as “the most epic chip-building effort, combining logic, memory, and advanced packaging all under one roof.” Output is intended for Optimus robots, Cybercabs, and SpaceX’s space-based data centers. Intel ( NASDAQ:INTC ) signed on in April 2026 with vague terms. Tesla’s near-term silicon supply is covered: Samsung’s Taylor, Texas fab produces the AI5 chip, Tesla struck a separate $16.5 billion Samsung deal for its next-generation AI6 chip, and TSMC ( NYSE:TSM ) handles the rest. Terafab is a longer-dated bet.
SpaceX’s own S-1 filing for its June 2026 IPO described Terafab as only a “general framework,” with no binding commitments between Tesla and SpaceX, no finalized intellectual-property split, and no obligation for either company to keep participating. The 1-terawatt figure is a Musk-originated number tied to his space ambitions, not a standard industry benchmark. At a heavily attended Grimes County meeting the night before the announcement, residents raised concerns about tax breaks and transparency.
For investors, Terafab is more thesis than balance-sheet item today. Tesla shares are down 27.17% year-to-date, weighed by a capex surge that pushed Q2 2026 free cash flow to negative $1.09 billion. Whether Musk’s terawatt-scale compute bet materializes as described will define the next 18 months.
