Amazon Prime Air maybe coming to a city near you

Amazon ( AMZN ) is taking Prime Air to the next level. The tech and retail giant plans to expand its drone delivery service to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, roughly a sixfold increase over its current footprint.

Yahoo Finance Tech Editor Dan Howley joins Market Domination to break down Amazon's drone delivery ambitions and what customers can expect as Prime Air expands to tens of millions of people.

Amazon, Dan, plans to expand its Prime Air drone delivery service, all right, to nearly 500 cities and towns by the end of the year. What do you what do you make of that news? How big a deal is that?

I I think it's it's a pretty big deal and it's uh uh they said uh millions of customers are in the area and that uh uh they have huge numbers where they see people actually using these kinds of services. It's it's a big deal. Uh, you know, uh I was I was reading uh the the journal report and they had mentioned how they're trying to make the economics make sense versus delivery by car or van, because you're only shipping a few things by air, you're firing them out regularly.

I think the the the thing that's interesting though is this is built for people who are in areas where perhaps it's a drive to get to the nearest, you know, store, right? Uh, and fulfillment vans or or cars, you know, may not be able to get to you and then to another spot as quickly, right? I mean, I I live in Queens. You get one van stopped on your block and it's hitting 18, you know, apartment buildings, right? And it's parked there for an hour and a half, but it's getting all these people.

With these these drones just like firing off and so it's not going to be something where, you know, all these drones are going to replace vans or cars or anything along those lines. That that is a dumb idea, right? It just doesn't make sense. The other thing is if you live in a major city, don't expect these drones to start dropping down from the sky. I don't know if, you know, you're in Chicago or, you know, you're in New York or Boston or something like that or, you know, maybe Los Angeles because it's not as, you know, vertical, but I I I doubt that we're going to have drones delivering for us.

But it is something that that we are seeing a lot of companies invested in. Walmart obviously.

Well I mean from it's from Walmart to Dor Dash. I mean, all there's so much excitement about drone delivery. I mean, broadly, does that surprise you all the enthusiasm? What do you make of that?

Personally, yeah. I mean, you know, I'm from Jersey, so I would imagine that people would just start throwing rocks at these things. And, you know, we were just talking, why would they when they could just wait until something lands? And it's the exact same idea, you know, like you think, okay, well, they're more vulnerable. But then, you know, a dude drops off your Amazon package and there's, you know, some person behind him, you know, porch pirating stealing your stuff right away anyway. So it's like, well, it's six to one half doesn't the other whether a drone does it or a person does it, someone who wants to take your stuff is going to take your stuff.

Um, but I I I do think that it it just the the way that this continues to expand is so interesting. Um, but it is also, you know, smaller packages, right? So I just got a 22 pound bag of cat food. I don't think the drones are going to be flying that around, right? The battery will die instantly. So I mean, it's it's going to be smaller things, medications, things like that. I I do think it's very cool and I think for people who are in more rural areas, it's going to be very helpful, but as I said, it's not going to overtake, you know, the uh the huge trucks or vans that we see people driving around or even, you know, independent contractors who drive around their cars with uh delivering Amazon packages. I don't I don't think those are going away anytime soon.
