Bond market rout may not be cause for alarm, but what is it signaling to the Fed?

As global bond yields ( ^TYX , ^TNX , ^FVX ) remain elevated after surging on Tuesday, WisdomTree head of fixed income strategy Kevin Flanagan examines what these movements may be signaling to the Federal Reserve ahead of the US central bank's Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium next week.

And there's no question that things began to change, especially here in the US, uh when the war in the Middle East began and we got that initial shot to the upside with energy prices, creating that kind of inflationary anxiety that we've been seeing. But, you know, since that point in time, there's been another key factor as well, besides say concerns about supply, fiscal deficits throughout the globe. We also have a new Fed chair here and he has elevated the uncertainty quotient and that is wreaking havoc for longer dated or shall I say, the back end of the Treasury curve.

Would you say though, Kevin, this broadly in your opinion remains orderly, this bond sell-off or no, we should be concerned as investors about the speed of the moves?

No, no, it's it's relatively orderly. I mean, I I I can go back a couple of decades and you didn't have moves like that. But moves like we're seeing now in the bond market are are somewhat happen stance. I don't think it's it's cause for any alarms at this stage of the game. But, you know, it it does bear watching. We're not quite yet in bond vigilante phase yet, but there's no question that the bond market is trying to send a message here. And one of the messages, obviously you mentioned on the fiscal side of the equation, but I think more importantly to the Fed chairman that this pulling back on forward guidance. Nah, you can't just say black or white. We need a gray, we need something from you. A week from Friday, we get Jackson Hall. I don't think you're going to get anything from Warsh, but that bond market wants some type of guidance.

So basically you're saying, listen, investors decided, we don't know what the Fed's going to do next, so we want to be paid more for that uncertainty, Kevin?

Yeah, so no, no doubt. So the further you go out on the curve, right, you're talking about heightened volatility, you're talking about heightened uncertainty. Heightened uncertainty is going to impact the back end of the market, the longer dated maturities, more so than say a Treasury two-year note. And that's exactly what you're seeing.

Um, you know, if you go back to your opening comment, the Treasury 30 year, Treasury 20 year, Treasury 10 year. That's where the action is occurring and these 20-year highs is more in that 30 years. So, you know, you're kind of going in reverse order, per se, but it's all within the back end of the curve for sure.
