President Donald Trump continues to face low approval ratings over his handling of the Iran war, a new poll showed.
Sixty-five percent of U.S. adults disapproved of how Trump was handling Iran, according to an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll released on Friday. The poll found that adults were divided along party lines, with most Republicans approving of Trump’s handling of Iran and most Democrats disapproving.
The poll showed 71% of Republicans approved of Trump’s handling of Iran, while 28% disapproved. On the other hand, 92% of Democrats disapproved and just 8% approved.
The poll also found that more than half of U.S. adults said military action against Iran has “gone too far.” Fifty-three percent said it went “too far,” 25% said it was “about right” and 18% said it had not gone far enough.
This also fell along partisan lines, with 82% of Democrats saying that military action went too far. Forty-two percent of Republicans said it was about right and 37% of Republicans said it had not gone far enough.
The poll also found that Trump’s approval rating remained steady, with 37% approving of how he is handling his job. This is unchanged from when the poll was last conducted in May, according to The Associated Press.
The poll was conducted among 3,040 U.S. adults between June 11 and June 17. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
The poll also comes as Vice President JD Vance signaled progress on Monday in his lengthy talks with senior Iranian officials in Switzerland.
“The final deal is the house,” Vance told reporters after initial talks with Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf . “We set the foundation. We haven’t built the house, but we’ve laid a successful foundation to get to a good place for the American people.”
Iran noted “major progress” toward end the fighting in Lebanon and called that the first real test of the negotiations.
The mediation effort in Switzerland, which started Sunday and stretched into early Monday, had rocky moments. But the talks also led to some agreements, mediators said, as technical talks continue this week.
