Meta Platforms ( META ) faces a new trial regarding social media addiction brought by 29 US attorneys general.

What is this Meta trial you're watching this week?

Yeah, this is uh another social media addiction trial. Uh basically it's 29 state uh attorneys general. Uh they're accusing meta of uh basically building the their their apps to keep kids, teens running uh or or uh scrolling for longer. Uh and as a result, uh exposing them to content or uh, you know, different posts that result in psychological harm.

And so, you know, it's it's they're going after the the design, not the content itself. And so that's the way that they believe they'll get around uh question about section 230 uh and whether or not it's it's protected speech, um, for these companies or or that they're not held liable uh for the content that's posted on their platforms. That's that's basically what section 230 does more more or less.

Um, and so this is uh has the potential to be a massive issue for meta in terms of the payout. They're saying that if they are found liable in in this uh civil suit that they will have to pay up to potentially $1.4 trillion and their market cap is 1.5 trillion.

Now this the state AGs haven't said what they're that they would ask for in terms of uh, you know, potential penalties or things along those lines, but you know, you could see that being uh a massive threat for the company itself.

There's also, you know, the potential that they would be told, you know, maybe not pay as much, but change the way your apps are built. Make sure that there's ways that you can identify teens on the platform. They they say that uh the AG say that meta knows that there are teens on the platform uh under 13 and use their information. That would be a violation of the Children Online Privacy Protection Act.

Um, they say that the the infinite scroll uh, you know, likely needs to change uh and you know, the the constant alerts that teens get. Uh they say that that interrupts their their sleep habits uh and can result uh in issues along those lines.

And so, you know, this is we've seen them lose two other trials before. Uh, this one would be just kind of a watershed moment, I think for uh, how potentially these companies are, uh, you know, held liable in court. Uh, but meta obviously denies uh all of this. They they say that, you know, they do a lot for teens and to protect people who are on their platform from these kinds of harms.

They say that they're constantly updating their systems and, you know, working with parents. And so we'll just have to see what happens here, but as I said, you know, they're saying 1.4 trillion. That would be an incredible sum if they ended up having to pay that.
