Amazon Prime Day ( AMZN ) is finally here as the 2026 consumer event kicks off on Tuesday and will run through Friday, June 26. Adobe Analytics predicts consumers could spend up to $26 billion in online shopping across this year's Prime Day.
Amazon Prime vice president Jamil Ghani discusses the deals and value savings being offered, as well as the e-commerce outlet's practice of dynamic price matching.
2026 Amazon Prime Day is underway with Adobe Analytics estimating that consumers will spend over get this, $26 billion in online shopping over the course of the four-day shopping event. Jamil Ghani, Amazon Prime VP joins me now. Jamil, thanks for being with us. I mean this is sort of the kickoff for like the summer savings holiday. It feels like nowadays. Let's talk some strategy because there are so many deals out there. What are the two top categories that consumers can expect to maybe see the best deals in over the course of the next four days?
Well Brooke, it's really nice to see you. Um we are off and running with Prime Day 2026. As you said, four days, June 23rd to June 26th. The reality is it's hard to pick just two categories. We're going to have millions of deals across 35 categories. Some of the ones that really resonate with me, you've got Drunk Elephant in the beauty category, you've got Nespresso uh in top big deals uh dropping three times a day.
Um you've got toys on sale. I know I have three young daughters. We go to a lot of birthday parties. I'm going to be stocking up on LEGOs and Marvel and Star Wars.
You also can save in grocery. Um we're really, really trying to show that uh we are a top tier grocery destination. So there's going to be deals on everything from, you know, barbecue classics to uh Annie's organic snacks. You really can't shop any part of the store and not run into really high quality Prime day deals. So I'm very excited for our members all around the world.
All right, Jamil, I'm taking notes here. Drunk Elephant, Nespresso, toys. I'm writing down some notes too. I know that right now as consumers are under a little bit of pressure. They still are seeking those essential goods like those groceries you had mentioned. Amazon clearly has been really leaning into this category. So maybe how does this year's Amazon Prime Day when it comes to groceries compare to previous?
Yeah, we've been investing for years in uh selection across our entire store, but in particular grocery and everyday essentials. you know, now more than ever, consumers are trying to make their dollar stretch and that's as true in the uh, you know, single time big purchases like TV, electronics, you know, we've got sales on JBL, beats, bose, but it's equally true on the things that you use repeatedly in your home. You know, that's diapers, that's wipes, that's snacks, that's grocery.
And all of that selection takes advantage of our uh uh investments in speed. We now have, you know, 9,000 cities uh around the country that benefit from same day delivery. So you have tens of millions of items that will be at your doorstep today. Um where else is that more relevant than in the things you need to consume today or kids need in their lunchbox tomorrow. So groceries is an incredibly important business for us. Everyday essentials incredibly important. Prime day is going to bring that to life with exceptional deals.
And this also comes at a time where consumer sentiment was at a record low. We've now seen it come up a little bit off those lows. Jamil, do you think that consumers have been maybe building up their carts ahead of of this mega deal promotion?
Yeah, I think this is a behavior you see every single year. Who doesn't like to save money, right? And and that's true today, that's been true for the 12 years that we've offered Prime day. It is a celebration of our members in the middle of summer. It's also the unofficial kickoff to back to college and back to school. So not only are folks putting in things in the cart, you know, in the in the days and weeks ahead, they're also thinking about the things that they need come the fall. You know, we're going to have deals on Amazon basics, we're going to have deals on the electronics that college students need as they head off uh uh for uh school in the fall. And so it serves so many different needs. The way I like to think about it is that Prime day is about the checklist of needs and wants. You know, you you have things that you need for the pantry, for the toiletries for the kitchen, for kids, but you also have some wants that you might have your eye on. This year, Alexa Plus in particular is helping customers keep their eye on things, either needs or wants. You can set alerts with Alexa, you can even tell Alexa, hey, when it hits this price, please just go ahead and buy it for me. And so we're just trying to make it easier and easier for you to again, make that dollar stretch, meet the budget, check off the things on your needs and wants list.
There's some questions that consumers are concerned about about dynamic pricing. When exactly will they know whether get they're not they're getting the best deal? Are retailers just raising the prices in order to lower the prices? What's your message to consumers when it comes to this dynamic pricing play that they're worried that retailers are doing.
Yeah, I I I can say unequivocally, Amazon matches prices amongst all of our competitors. That is our everyday low price uh approach. For deals, we make it incredibly transparent for customers to know one that this is a deal because we indicate the reference price that we use to calculate the discount relative to what actual Amazon customers were paying uh in recent times. We also allow you to look at the price history. You can, you know, ask Alexa to help you with that or you can check right on the detail page um and see, I use that all the time to understand, you know, this is something I'd really like to wait until it hits this price. I can go and look at that on any product and know exactly what the price now is and how it compares to historical. So I can tell you know, with with a lot of certainty that we take it very, very seriously to uh build and maintain the trust of our customers and deals are no different. And so uh customers, prime members can shop with confidence on Prime day that they are getting a great deal.
Jamil, in a few quick words, competition heating up. This is now the 12th year. Walmart, Target, Best Buy also looking to get in. What's your message to those competitors this week?
Uh I don't have much of a message to my competitors. I'm really, really focused uh for the four days here across 27 countries on serving prime members. What I would like to say to prime members is thank you for being a prime member. We really appreciate the engagement in the store, in Prime video and all the other benefits that Prime offers. It's a unique membership that meets so many different customer needs across convenience, savings and entertainment. I hope they enjoy prime day. I hope they save a lot of money. I know I'm going home right now to shop. I got three young kids. We have a lot of lunchboxes to fill, a lot of summer fun to have. So I hope you everybody enjoys it.
