U.S. dollar slips to 100.557 as risk currencies rebound, Brent tops $90 - Economy Middle East

The U.S. dollar retreated in Asian trading on Monday as investor confidence showed signs of recovery, ending a three-day advance triggered by escalating conflict in the Middle East and weaker demand for risk-sensitive assets.

The dollar index, which measures the U.S. currency against a basket of six major peers, fell 0.1 percent to 100.69. The decline followed three consecutive sessions of gains against most global currencies.

The euro rose 0.1 percent to $1.1444 ahead of the European Central Bank’s policy meeting later in the week.

Sterling also gained 0.1 percent to $1.3463 as Andy Burnham prepared to succeed Keir Starmer as British prime minister.

The dollar was unchanged against the Japanese yen at 162.335 as trading volumes remained thin during Japan’s Marine Day public holiday.

Risk-sensitive currencies recovered some ground as investors cautiously returned to assets that had faced pressure during the previous week’s market retreat.

The Australian dollar advanced 0.2 percent to $0.6996, while the New Zealand dollar climbed 0.3 percent to $0.5858.

Fabien Yip, a market analyst at IG in Sydney, said buyers were returning and providing support to some of the riskier currencies.

“We’re seeing a bit of a rebound in the riskier currencies like the Aussie, while sterling has also strengthened a little bit,” Yip said.

“It’s not so much the dollar weakening, as support for other currencies.”

The moves suggested that the dollar’s decline was driven partly by renewed demand for other currencies rather than a fundamental deterioration in sentiment toward the greenback.

Geopolitical tensions remained a significant influence on currency and commodity markets as fighting between the United States and Iran intensified.

Brent crude futures surged 2.6 percent to $90.37 per barrel after the United States said it had begun a ninth consecutive night of strikes against Iran.

The latest military action followed an announcement that at least two U.S. service members had been killed in Jordan.

Brent’s move above $90 highlighted continuing concerns about the security of energy supplies and shipping routes in the Middle East. Rising oil prices have also complicated the outlook for global inflation and interest rates.

The oil market’s response contrasted with the cautious recovery in risk-sensitive currencies, showing that investors remained concerned about the economic consequences of a prolonged conflict even as immediate demand for the dollar eased.

The U.S. dollar fell 0.1 percent against China’s offshore yuan to 6.772 after the People’s Bank of China kept its benchmark lending rates unchanged.

China left the rates steady for a 14th consecutive month, matching market expectations.

The decision provided some stability for the yuan as investors assessed the outlook for the Chinese economy, monetary policy and international trade.

Currency markets were also preparing for several major central bank decisions, including the European Central Bank’s meeting and the Federal Reserve’s July policy announcement.

The euro’s modest advance reflected positioning ahead of the ECB meeting, while expectations that U.S. rates would remain unchanged limited the dollar’s ability to extend its previous three-day rally.

Financial markets continued to anticipate that the Federal Reserve would leave interest rates unchanged at its July 29 meeting.

Fed funds futures indicated an implied probability of 85.6 percent that policymakers would hold rates steady, according to CME Group’s FedWatch tool. That compared with a 61.5 percent probability one month earlier.
