The July 2026 Alaska Economic Trends , published by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development and available on the state of Alaska website, reports on the troubling impact of President Trump’s tariffs on Alaska’s economy and, more importantly, points to the dramatic cost to Alaska’s economy brought on directly by the war with Iran.
Here are just three noteworthy paragraphs quoted directly from that document:
“On Feb. 28 the United States and Israel began attacking targets in Iran, resulting in retaliatory strikes on energy and other infrastructure throughout the Middle East and the near-complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz.”
“About one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits this vital chokepoint each year, and Iran’s blockade of international waterways triggered the greatest energy supply shock in modern history.”
“This disruption caused energy prices to soar but, it also increased cost pressure on nearly everything else in the globally integrated and energy-dependent economy.”
President Trump’s war with Iran not only caused the huge spike in gas prices, but it also increased the cost of everything Alaskans buy. Sadly, President Trump isn’t concerned about affordability for Alaskans. He’s too busy trying to get Greenland from Denmark. He’s distracted by his new ballroom. And his obsession with the color of the reflecting pool leaves no time for addressing the financial concerns of Alaskans.
President Trump started an unnecessary war that closed down the Strait of Hormuz, and he has absolutely no idea how to fix the problem. Forty-six years ago, the Iranians humiliated President Carter over the hostage crisis. Now Iran is schooling President Trump on the importance of the Strait of Hormuz to the world economy. And all Alaskans are paying for it.
