Tech leaders lobby against restrictions on open-source AI
In his first-ever X post, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang amplified an open letter arguing that, for the US to be victorious in the AI race, it must champion an open ecosystem. The open letter was signed by a coalition of companies, from big ones like Microsoft, IBM and Meta to VC-backed ones like Hugging Face and Perplexity, with several of their CEOs and other notable tech industry leaders also promoting it online. The push against restrictions on open-weight AI models—which can be publicly downloaded, modified and run independently—comes as the US government plots how to respond to escalating allegations that Chinese AI labs are distilling models from American labs to build their own. And the letter’s signers also have the most to lose from such restrictions. CTA | Newsletter Subscription | Inline Article Placement Nvidia, for instance, has not only pledged $26 billion to build its own open-weight models, but it's also invested in startups that benefit from open source in AI. It participated in the $235 million round for the open-source model hub Hugging Face back in 2023 and also invested in the $2 billion round for Reflection AI, which has pitched itself as the Western answer to China’s DeepSeek. Another of the letter's signers, VC firm Andreessen Horowitz, has also been a backer of open-source AI companies. It invested in open-model evaluation platform LMArena, open image-model startup Black Forest Labs and OpenRouter, a startup for routing queries between open and closed models. More broadly, restrictions on open models could shrink investment opportunities for VC firms as countless startups are building products using those models. Y Combinator also signed the letter. Notably, although OpenAI CEO Sam Altman quickly reposted Huang's note on X, writing, "I want the US to win in AI both in open source and proprietary models," his company only signed the letter on Friday afternoon after its absence was widely noticed. Anthropic has not signed the letter, however. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has said in congressional testimony, "the scaling of open source models, I think it's going down a very dangerous path," and more recently called open source "a red herring," saying, "I don't think open source works the same way in AI that it has worked in other areas." The company has not responded to a request for comment. Still, it remains unclear whether the US government's justification for considering restrictions even holds. Researchers say that Fable, the Anthropic model that the Chinese company Moonshot is accused of distilling for its Kimi 3 LLM, was not publicly available long enough for Kimi to have trained on it. But how the fight shakes out could have major implications for the open- and closed-source ecosystems and the capital structures that fund them. List - Latest ResearchList - Most Recent News
