Win or lose, Meta still faces real risks in its social media addiction trial

Yahoo Finance Tech Editor Dan Howley highlights the risks that Meta Platforms ( META ) could still face even if it wins its current social media addiction trial brought on by four attorneys general.

Let's talk about your latest story on Meta, where you make the case, Dan Howley, you see Meta faces real risks here whether it wins in court or loses. If Meta wins, what, why, why would they still be worried? What would be on their radar?

I mean they're still facing thousands and thousands of other suits, right? This is one of a litany of lawsuits that have been filed. and it's really, you know, what we're what what's going on right now in Oakland, California uh is a kind of test trial for this larger trial uh from 29 different this larger lawsuit from 29 different AGs. Four of those AGs are running this test trial or working on this test trial. They're from uh Colorado, California, New Jersey, Kentucky. And that outcome will kind of determine what happens going forward with regards to that case. But we've already seen Me lose two cases when it comes to uh people suing over the design of their products and the impact that it's had on people. Uh in uh the original Los Angeles case it was on uh a young girl. In the New Mexico case, they lost as part of a public nuisance uh lawsuit. And so this means that, you know, the kind of uh strategy of going after companies for the way they design their products isn't completely in outer space. It's, you know, it's it's a viable method. Met is going to uh obviously has said that they're going to uh uh uh uh uh challenge the lawsuits. But, you know, I I think that if they're going to move forward, they have to develop ways to avoid this in the future. And that could mean having to fundamentally change their products on their own. Now, does it necessarily mean that infinite scroll will disappear? Probably not. They still want people's eyeballs glued as long as possible, but there may be other ways that they could change their systems so that they don't have to deal with as many lawsuits, or it doesn't seemingly impact people as these state AGs alleged and and other lawsuits alleged. But, you know, if they lose, I mean, and and the judge kind of goes all in on what the states want, which is not a likely outcome, but as far as going all in. Uh they could be forced to get rid of uh infinite scroll, they could be forced to get rid of autoplay video. They could be forced to do a number of things and you know, Meta would argue, what about YouTube? You know, we're not the only folks that have things like ephemeral messaging. That's how that's what Snapchat originally started as. You know, and so those are the things that that the states are looking to punish. Um and Me would obviously argue, we're not the only ones, what about these folks. So, it's it's kind of a a messy situation right now. There was no court today because a juror was sick. It'll pick back up on Monday. Um and we'll just have to see when Mark Zuckerberg um and uh uh Adam show up and take the stand because those will be very interesting days.
