Iran Loses One-Third of South Pars Gas Production Capacity Due to War Damage - IranWire

The Secretary General of the Iranian Petroleum Industry Federation announced that following damage to four South Pars refineries during the 40-day war, approximately one-third of the field’s gas production capacity has been lost, warning that Iran will likely face gas shortages during the upcoming cold season.

Speaking to Entekhab News on Monday, August 17, Erfan Afazali stated that gas produced from the South Pars field is processed across 13 refineries, including eight in Asaluyeh and five in Kangan. He explained that four refineries were impacted by attacks during the recent conflict, and damage to processing facilities resulted in a reduction of about one-third of production capacity.

Afazali noted that the Ministry of Petroleum assigned the reconstruction and repair of two damaged refineries to the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and the remaining two to the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC). He added that partial repair operations have commenced, and long-lead equipment and materials have been identified.

However, the Secretary General emphasized that not all the necessary resources and equipment for reconstructing these four refineries are available domestically, and funding for certain items is currently not prioritized.

He estimated that repairing and rebuilding the damaged refineries will take at least one and a half to two years, adding that procuring large, long-lead equipment could further prolong the reconstruction process.

At the same time, Afazali mentioned that by constructing small, fast-built processing units, it is expected that 20 to 25 percent of the lost capacity will be recovered by the end of the year. Nevertheless, he warned that given the current scale of production loss, Iran will face a gas shortage during the cold season.

He also pointed to Qatar’s increased extraction capacity from the shared South Pars field, noting that Qatar installed and commissioned one of its compression hubs last year, a move enabling it to maintain extraction levels and maximize its yield.

Afazali stated that although approximately one-third of the South Pars field lies within Iranian territory, Qatar currently extracts about 100 million cubic meters per day more than Iran. He emphasized that to remedy this disparity in the long term, Iran must simultaneously pursue field compression projects alongside refinery repairs.
