Six in 10 U.S. voters say the war with Iran was not worth it, according to a new Quinnipiac University Poll of national sentiments on current events. Support of President Donald Trump bumped up slightly to 38% from a similar poll last month, when it reached a new low of 34%. The latest poll of 1,165 self-identified registered voters nationwide found that nearly half the country thinks the United States is too supportive of Israel. "After months of diplomatic fits and starts, global economic repercussions and a broad loss of life in the region, a majority of voters make their feelings clear: the Iran war was a bad idea," said Quinnipiac University polling analyst Tim Malloy when the poll was released in the early afternoon on Wednesday. Fifty-nine percent of voters surveyed said the White House is not being transparent enough about the 80-year-old president's health. Fifty percent of those surveyed believe that Trump is not physically healthy, while 46% say he is. A similar divide occurred when asked about the president's mental health. "Is the president physically and mentally well? On both questions, half of voters have their concerns, and a majority think the White House is keeping them in the dark," Malloy said. Only 34% of respondents, reacting to the signing of a deal with Iran, believe the war was worth it, with only 4% of Democrats, 29% of unaffiliated voters and 17% of Republicans among supporters. Fifty-nine percent said they are not confident that the Iran settlement will work, while 37 percent said they were confident it will. Sixty one percent believe it is likely Iran will develop nuclear weapons, while 31% believe the opposite. In the highest response to the question since the Quinnipiac Poll started asking it in early 2017, 48% of respondents said the U.S. is too supportive of Israel, with 38% saying it's about right and 7% saying the U.S. is not supportive enough. Sixty-six percent of Democrats said the U.S. is too supportive, along with 20% of Republicans and 55% of unaffiliated voters. Only 20% of voters had a favorable opinion of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with a 48% unfavorable rating. Thirty percent of those surveyed said they had not heard enough about Netanyahu to have an opinion. "Netanyahu gets poor marks from American voters as their appetite for supporting Israel wanes, with the share of voters who think the U.S. is too supportive of Israel hitting a new high," Malloy said. Most voters — 55% — disapprove of Trump's presidency. Poll questions included opinions on his immigration policy, in which 42% approve and 55% disapprove; and the economy, in which 59% disapprove and 39% approve. When asked their opinions on Trump's keeping his 2024 campaign promises, 40% said he was standing by his promises, while 55% said he is not. On issues before the U.S. Supreme Court, 69% of those surveyed said the high court should keep in place birthright citizenship, with 27% saying the high court should reverse the 1898 ruling that anyone born in this country is automatically a citizen regardless of their parents' status. Seventy percent of respondents said transgender women and girls should not be allowed to play on women's and girls' sports teams. Twenty-four percent said they should be allowed to play. Asked if the fall election were now, 49% said they want Democrats to win control of the U.S. House of Representatives, while 42% would like continued GOP control. On the release of documents in the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking case, 70% of voters think the Trump administration is not doing enough to hold associates responsible, with 17% saying Trump is doing enough. On the issue of social media and children, 67% support banning it for children under 16, with 25% opposed to such a prohibition. "Under 16 is too soon for kids to have access to social media apps, say voters, as they give voice to concerns other countries are addressing,"said Malloy. The poll was conducted between June 18 and 22, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4%.
