The 38-year-old captain is accused of involvement in Russia’s so-called shadow fleet and breach of sanctions.Defending her husband Ajay who is in British custody, Ritu Pant alleged, “My husband was made the scapegoat.” Contending that the captain's job is primarily to ensure that the cargo reaches its destination safely, she asserted, “The master's responsibility in any vessel is to just get the cargo safely to its destination,” she said, AFP reported.Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Britain had imposed sanctions on all vessels helping Moscow move oil. Accused of transporting oil and operating through complex ownership and insurance arrangements, MV Smyrtos captain is facing sanctions charges in Britain. While the intercepted vessel remains anchored off the southern English coast, the other 24 sailors were sent back to their home countries without any charges.Recalling her husband's reaction after his arrest, she said, “He was broken and he was just crying."
