KeyBanc Has Message For Apple Stock Investors

KeyBanc Has Message For Apple Stock Investors
This article first appeared on GuruFocus .
Apple ( NASDAQ:AAPL ) is showing encouraging demand signals heading into its next iPhone cycle, but KeyBanc says investors should not mistake stronger spending for the start of another major growth leg. The firm remains Underweight with a $250 price target, arguing that higher device prices could slow unit growth, eventually spilling over into Apple's critical Services business.

KeyBanc's monthly carrier survey showed indexed spending rising 9% from June, well ahead of the three-year seasonal average of 2%. Analyst Brandon Nispel nevertheless called the reading relatively neutral, arguing that some of the improvement simply reverses unusually weak seasonal trends over the previous three months.
There is also a risk consumers are pulling purchases forward ahead of Apple's expected September product launch.
While the NT numbers appear reasonable, we see [near-term] iPhone growth as already peaked, Nispel said.
His concern centers on Apple increasingly leaning on pricing rather than volume. KeyBanc expects higher prices to pressure unit and user growth, with U.S. carrier subsidies pulling back and upgrade rates moderating. The firm forecasts Services growth slowing to 7% in fiscal 2027 versus consensus near 12%.
That is a particularly important risk because Apple enters the next iPhone cycle with substantial momentum. Fiscal third-quarter revenue rose 16% to $109.4 billion, while iPhone, Mac and Services all posted June-quarter revenue records. Apple's installed base also reached an all-time high across its major product categories and regions.
The valuation leaves little room for disappointment. KeyBanc says Apple trades around 34 times earnings compared with a three-year average near 28 times.
The next iPhone cycle may therefore become a test of price versus volume .
Investors should watch upgrade rates, carrier promotions, international demand and whether higher average selling prices compensate for softer unit growth. Most importantly, Services needs continued expansion of Apple's installed base to sustain its premium earnings profile.
Strong early demand for the new premium iPhones could challenge KeyBanc's bearish thesis. But if price increases suppress upgrades and Services growth begins moving toward the firm's 7% forecast, Apple's elevated earnings multiple could become increasingly difficult to defend.
