Tapestry Crushed Earnings but the Stock Plunged: Buy, Sell, or Hold Now?

Tapestry Crushed Earnings but the Stock Plunged: Buy, Sell, or Hold Now?
At $128.39, Tapestry ( NYSE:TPR | TPR Price Prediction ) looks attractive for investors with a stomach for volatility. The maker of Coach and Kate Spade beat expectations on both lines in Thursday’s fiscal fourth-quarter report, then watched the stock drop 16.5% in a single session. The question is whether that reaction was rational or an overshoot.
Tapestry operates at the accessible end of luxury handbags. Following the August 2025 divestiture of Stuart Weitzman, this is a cleaner two-brand story than a year ago. The stock had run from a 52-week low of $93.00 to a high of $164.80 heading into earnings, a setup that makes an in-line quarter feel like a disappointment.
Revenue reached $1.88 billion, up 8.9% year on year, while non-GAAP EPS came in at $1.32 versus the $1.28 consensus. Non-GAAP operating margin expanded 250 basis points to 19.3%. The problem was forward guidance. FY2027 guidance of $8.4 billion to $8.5 billion in revenue and $7.80 to $7.90 in EPS landed roughly in line, not above.
The earnings algorithm is working. FY2026 delivered EPS growth of 38% to $7.05 on two-year annualized revenue growth of 9.4%, evidence that pricing and mix are compounding faster than the top line. Coach handbag AUR rose mid-teens for the year without churning units, and Greater China grew 28% in the quarter.
Capital return is the other pillar. Tapestry returned $1.7 billion to shareholders in fiscal 2026 through dividends and buybacks, retired 11.5 million shares at an average price near $118, and raised the dividend 16% to $1.85 annualized. Management is buying its own stock at prices below current levels.
The five-year revenue CAGR is only 6.8%, and sell-side models call for deceleration to roughly 5.9% over the next 12 months. That pace trails growth-stock cadence, so the earnings story depends on continued margin gains and buybacks rather than demand. This is now the second consecutive quarter in which a beat was met with selling, suggesting expectations ran ahead of the business.
Concentration risk matters. Kate Spade declined 11% for the full year and 7% in Q4, and management is guiding to a high single-digit decline again in FY2027. With a beta of 1.46, any consumer wobble hits this name harder than the average discretionary holding.
The stock trades at a forward P/E of 17x, neither cheap nor stretched for a business compounding EPS in the double digits. A patient investor could wait for the Q1 FY2027 print to see whether Kate Spade’s Q1 low-double-digit decline guidance holds or worsens, and whether Coach’s low-teens Q1 revenue growth shows durability. The cost of waiting is missing a snapback if the selloff proves technical.
Shares last closed at $128.39, against an analyst price target of $168.20, implying meaningful upside if consensus holds. Coverage skews bullish, though targets are directional, not guarantees.
Shares are up just 0.05% year to date and down 20.8% over the past week, while the S&P 500 has seen a 13.9% gain year to date. Over longer horizons, the picture flips: shares are up 190.3% over five years.
At the current price, Tapestry looks compelling. The bull case is compelling in the short term. Consistent earnings beats, expanding margins, and disciplined capital allocation give Tapestry a defensive posture within accessible luxury, and the post-earnings gap looks more like positioning unwind than a fundamental break. On average, Tapestry’s stock has gained in the week following an earnings beat, even when the initial day-of reaction was sharply negative.
The path to appreciation runs through Q1 FY2027, where management has guided EPS to approximately $1.55. If Coach holds low-teens growth and buybacks continue at the guided $1.35 billion pace, the earnings algorithm re-rates the multiple back toward the recent 50-day moving average of $146.75.
For the bull case to sustain over three to five years, two conditions must be met. First, Kate Spade must return to growth rather than merely stabilize. Second, Coach’s traction with Gen Z, now roughly 35% of the 11 million new customers Tapestry acquired in FY2026, must prove structural rather than cyclical. If either breaks, reassess.
