BEIJING - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has observed tests of major weapons, including a multiple rocket launcher system and a warhead of a tactical ballistic missile, state-run media said Friday, believed to be an effort to modernize artillery and missile forces targeting South Korea.
The tests conducted on Thursday evaluated the combat characteristics of the upgraded 24-tubular multiple rocket launcher system and the power of the tactical ballistic missile's special mission warhead, among others, the official Korean Central News Agency said.
The firing range of the rocket launcher has been extended to 90 kilometers. All elements of its firepower system were automated and a self-steered, precise guidance system was introduced, KCNA said.
The special mission warhead of the ballistic missile was "aimed at inflicting fatal damage on major targets including airfields, ports and power facilities of the enemy," the news agency added.
Kim expressed great satisfaction with the test results, which proved technological progress in "bringing about a change in the fire posture on the southern border." He called for "adhering to the three principles of putting weapons on an automatic, long-range and ultra-precision basis," the report said.
A South Korean military official said Seoul had detected Thursday's firing of more than 10 rocket shells and other projectiles from the eastern part of North Korea.
