2. 해석 (Interpretation):

(Implication):

TSX dips as miners slump, bond yields spike on Mideast uncertainty - theglobeandmail.com

Canada’s main stock index fell to ‌a 12-day low on Tuesday as bond yields climbed globally and hopes faded of a U.S.-Iran peace deal, with technology and metal mining shares posting some of the biggest declines.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index ended down 299.99 points, or 0.8 per cent, at 36,367.93, its third straight day of declines and the lowest closing level since August 6.

Long-term borrowing costs from ‌the U.S. to Japan and Germany rose to their highest levels in decades, as renewed inflation worries added to lingering concerns about fiscal pressures across major economies, dealing bond markets a fresh blow.

“Bond market at ‌yield levels like this does ‌start to compete for capital with the stock market and could put pressure on stock prices if we keep seeing this,” said Brian Madden, chief investment officer at First Avenue Investment Counsel.

U.S. crude oil futures settled 0.5 per cent higher at US$84.94 a barrel as Iran said it would adopt a more offensive stance and the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed, and Washington ruled out extending a ceasefire. Elevated energy prices have worsened the inflation outlook.

Another concern for investors was the approaching deadline on Wednesday for the U.S. to impose new 50-Pper-cent tariffs on a wide range of Canadian goods.

“Investors are sort of watching and waiting on that fairly closely, tentatively,” Madden said.

Wall Street also closed lower with semiconductors leading technology declines.

The TSX’s materials group, which includes metal mining shares, fell 2.2 per cent. Gold was down 1.6 per cent.

Heavily weighted financials lost 1.1 per cent ‌and technology ended 2.3 per cent lower.

Shares of data center developer Keel Infrastructure tumbled 15.6 per cent to a three-and-a-half-month low, while shares of electronic equipment company Celestica were down 8.4 per cent.

Four of the 10 major sectors ended higher, including energy. It added 1.2 per cent.

Wall Street’s main indexes closed lower on Tuesday with semiconductors leading technology declines as Middle East uncertainty pushed bond yields to multiyear peaks, feeding concerns about borrowing costs and inflation.

Fading hopes for Middle East peace pushed oil prices higher, which in turn triggered an increase in U.S. 30-year Treasury bond yields to their highest levels since 2007. The 10-year bond yields touched their highest levels since January 2025.

The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index tumbled 5 per cent as investors fled stocks that had rallied previously on booming AI-related demand. Rising borrowing costs lowered how much investors were willing to pay for potential growth in technology profits.

“It starts off almost like a domino effect. Talks break down. That ‌leads to oil prices going up. That leads to higher inflation expectations and bond yields rise,” said Burns McKinney, portfolio manager at NFJ Investment Group.

He added that “every time bond yields rise, that tends to disproportionately hit the technology names.”

The S&P 500 lost 53.30 points, or 0.69 per cent, to 7,691.76 and the Nasdaq Composite shed 355.20 points, or 1.33 per cent, to 26,289.71, marking the biggest daily percentage decline since July 29 ‌for both.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 116.38 points, or ‌0.22 per cent, to 53,343.40.

Among the S&P 500’s 11 major sectors, information technology created by far the biggest index-point drag and was the benchmark’s biggest percentage loser, falling 1.9 per cent.

The S&P 500’s biggest drags from individual stocks came from chip companies, including leading AI chipmaker Nvidia, down 2.3 per cent, and memory chipmaker Micron Technology, which fell 7 per cent after rising almost 18 per cent in the previous five sessions.

Other hard-hit stocks included data storage firms Sandisk and Western Digital, which fell 9 per cent and 7.4 per cent respectively. The Roundhill Memory ETF tumbled 8.8 per cent after five straight gains.

“There’s nothing that can crack a momentum rally quite like interest rates moving higher and you’re getting evidence of that today,” said Tony Welch, chief investment officer at SignatureFD, who added that rising yields suggested that Federal Reserve policy is too easy for the growth and inflation outlook.

Leaving high-growth sectors, investors flocked to more defensive sectors such as healthcare, which added 1.6 per cent, and consumer staples, which finished up 1.1 per cent.

Wall Street’s fear gauge finished up 0.65 points at 15.84 for its highest close since August 4.
