Tesla Just Took a Blow to Its AI Chip Plans

Tesla ( NASDAQ:TSLA ) has lost another senior artificial-intelligence hardware engineer to DensityAI, adding fresh execution risk to Elon Musk's push to make custom silicon a critical part of Tesla's autonomous-driving and robotics strategy. Shishuang Sun, most recently Tesla's senior director of AI hardware design, has joined the startup built largely by former members of Tesla's Dojo team.

Sun worked on hardware for both Dojo and Autopilot and specializes in advanced packaging and system integration, an increasingly important bottleneck as AI chips consume more power and generate more heat.
His departure is particularly notable because DensityAI was founded by former Dojo chief Ganesh Venkataramanan and other Tesla veterans. Roughly 20 Dojo employees left for the startup before Tesla dismantled the original Dojo organization in August 2025.
Tesla subsequently shifted its chip strategy toward AI5 and AI6, which are intended to support autonomy and potentially broader training workloads. Tesla said earlier this year that AI5 production is planned for 2027 and AI6 for 2028.
That makes retaining experienced chip engineers increasingly important. Tesla's valuation thesis now depends heavily on Full Self-Driving, robotaxis and Optimus, all of which require efficient inference hardware at enormous scale. Tesla itself says its custom FSD chips are designed around maximizing silicon performance per watt for autonomous driving.
One personnel departure does not derail Tesla's AI roadmap, but repeated losses from a specialized hardware team can create schedule and execution risk.
Investors should watch whether Tesla keeps AI5 on track for 2027 production, whether AI6 development remains on schedule, and whether additional senior engineers follow Sun to DensityAI.
The broader question is whether Tesla can preserve enough internal chip expertise while relying on manufacturing partners and outside compute suppliers. A delay in AI5 or AI6 could matter far beyond semiconductor costs because those chips sit underneath Tesla's autonomy and robotics ambitions.
For now, Sun's exit is less an immediate earnings issue than another test of whether Tesla can rebuild and retain the technical bench required to deliver Musk's increasingly AI-heavy growth story.
